"Herbert... You've gone too far..."
— Ms. Wickson while covered in blood

Elisabeth Friedman Wickson, known to students as Ms. Wickson, is a character in ObsCure and the school nurse for Leafmore High. Over the course of the series, it is revealed that not only is she married to Leonard Friedman, but she is the mother of Jedidiah as well.

Story[]

Background[]

She was born on April 19th, 1865. Not much is known about her life until, at age 20, she married the researcher and botanist Leonard Friedman, another native of her hometown: Rockroad, Iowa.

It seems that Elisabeth was both particularly fond of, and obedient to her husband, never appearing to question Leonard's obsession with Mortifilia. Elisabeth even went as far as taking part in several of the Friedman twins' experiments, which, according to them, could give eternal life. So, when the Friedman twins eventually went on to found Leafmore High, she assisted her husband and took up the role of a student nurse, tending to students while also serving as a potential assistant in the twins' student kidnappings.

However, when Leonard decided to test a new serum of the Mortifilia directly on himself, Elisabeth protested he husband's actions. She wrote a letter to Herbert, which begged him to stop his brother from injecting himself. Herbert could not dissuade Leonard though, and her husband injected the last of the serum he had directly into himself. Sometime after this injection, but before Leonard's eventual mutation and immobility, Elisabeth fell pregnant with Jedidiah Friedman, who was born severely mutated and disfigured due to the instability of Leonard's cells. It is unclear whether Elisabeth was aware this could happen. She took care of her son, telling him stories until he'd go to sleep, and trying to distract him from the terrifying nightmares that he had every night.

Eventually, when Leonard began to show the effects of the serum, a slow and grotesque mutation that eventually turned him into an immobile, human-plant hybrid, Elisabeth and Herbert would lock him in the labs beneath the school to prevent from being exposed to anymore light. Her loyalty for Leonard never faded: desperate for a cure to the terrifying metamorphosis Leonard underwent, she began to assist Herbert with the experiments he did on the young students of Leafmore High, with the goal to eventually create a serum that would invert Leonard's transformation.

However, Elisabeth and Herbert's efforts were slow, and they began to realize they'd never survive long enough to create a cure. So in 1921, they injected themselves with a synthesized serum of Mortifilia in order to obtain eternal life, knowing that any exposure to sunlight could cause them to horribly mutate. Elisabeth continued to assist Herbert, and devoted nearly a century to the research on the Mortifilia flower to save her husband, even likely neglecting her child, leaving him alone in his home. Although by the start of the 21st century, even her dedication started to fail.

Leafmore Incident[]

Prior to the events of ObsCure, Elisabeth learned from Herbert that Professor Walden, a biology teacher, may have discovered the operation they ran beneath the school. During the event itself, she called Friedman's Office at 5:30PM and at 6:50PM, concerned that the students appeared to be experiencing symptoms similar to that of exposure to Mortifilia. Herbert never returned her calls.

Nurse Calling for Help

Wickson calling for help

Eventually, Miss Wickson found herself trapped in the infirmary and began to ask for help through the cameras. The group of survivors saw her after they entered in the Janitor's room and soon after raced into the dining hall, trying to save her. Elisabeth, aware of the creatures' weakness due to her research on Leonard, refused to open the infirmary's door until the creatures were exterminated by lights in the building. Having succeeded, the survivors entered the infirmary and found her particularly worried, uncontrollably muttering gibberish about a giant creature, a large door and a certain "Leonard". Convinced that the woman is out of her mind, the survivors leave the infirmary.

Eventually the survivors return to her infirmary after being infected by Herbert. The group returned to the building in hope that the Elisabeth could help them, only to discover Elisabeth covered with wounds, slumped in a pool of her own blood. She understood that the survivors were infected and in her final moments, revealed to them that there was an antidote, and it was in a section of the basement which can only be accessed through the school's gardens.

Personality[]

Elisabeth doesn't have much screen time in the ObsCure series, so what we know of her personality is limited. She appears to be loyal to Leonard, and assisted with Herbert's terrible experiments for over a century, out of that same loyalty. She appears to panic easily though, and whereas Herbert maintained his calm during the outbreak, Elisabeth fell into a near-catatonic fit.

Trivia[]

  • While not confirmed, there's a high possibility that Mr. Walden was the one who killed her. No monsters could have gotten into the infirmary due to the lights having been turned on prior to her death. Walden and the survivors are the only non-transformed people on the campus at that time.
  • In the old versions of ObsCure, Elisabeth Wickson's death is not absolutely necessary to complete the game. Once you exit the underground, you can go straight to the dormitory using wire cutters completely ignoring the nurse's fate. The Steam version solved this.
  • In the German version of the game, Wickson's surname was changed to Wilson, the reason due to the similarity to the word "Wichsen", a German expression that means masturbation.
